Cold-water fish are a rich source of omega 3 fatty acids. Low incidence of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and cancer observed in Intuit (Eskimo) populations with diets high in fish fat is what first sparked interest in EFA's as far back as the early 70's (Bang and Dyerberg, 1972). More recently published studies in major medical journals have deepened the public's understanding of the mechanics or bio-action of EFA's and revealed a startling array of benefits. Since 2000, eight prospective randomized clinical trials, eight epidemiological studies, and two animal studies provide substantial and conclusive scientific evidence that omega-3 fatty acids (DHA and EPA) reduce the risks of coronary heart disease. In 2003, for example, in Circulation: Journal of the American Heart Association, Professor Emeritus of Medicine at Harvard, Dr. Alexander Leaf and colleagues demonstrated that the omega 3's specifically block excessive sodium and calcium currents in the heart. Such excessive electrical discharges cause dangerous and erratic changes in heart rhythm. Arrhythmias are responsible for close to 60% (300,000 / year) of sudden death due to heart attack. A study of over 2000 male subjects with heart disease conducted in 1989 revealed a 29% reduction in mortality rate for the group eating just two meals a week of cold water fish. A study recently published by the American Heart Association of 11,323 heart attack patients showed that those who took a 1000 mg EFA supplement every day were 45% less likely to be dead at the end of 3.5 years. Further research has indicated that EFA's lower blood triglycerides, help restore favorable cholesterol readings by lowering LDL's by as much as 11%, guard against blood platelet aggregation (clots), hold inflammatory processes in check and serve therapeutically by transforming dangerous atherosclerotic plaques into harmless scars! The February 8, 2003 issue of the prestigious British medical journal, Lancet, reported fatty acids helped to "render harmless and stabilize the health in stroke patients who are at high risk of atherosclerotic plaques rupturing or forming clots." Another article in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) reporting on Harvard School of Public Health Follow Up Study involving more than 43,000 men found a "significant (44%) reduction of risk of ischemic stroke (JAMA 2002; 288:3130-3136).
Besides being incredibly protective of the cardiovascular system it is important to note that the "wall" or external sheath holding together nearly every cell in the body (and there are trillions of cells) is composed primarily of EFA's. Cells depend on their outer surface to communicate, chemically, with one another. Recent literature suggests that nearly every allergy can be accounted for by enfeebled or compromised intercellular communication. Restoring proper EFA levels can restore intercellular communication.
Skin and hair cells, especially, rely on the presence of EFA's to maintain elasticity and suppleness and tone. In dry climates, the presence of EFA's can keep skin from becoming dry and cracked. Besides dull and lifeless, "flat" looking hair, one obvious sign of EFA deficiency is dry or cracked skin particularly around the heels.
The benefits of EFA supplementation are extensive and well documented. In yet, our own FDA has only recently, grudgingly conceded as much.
