Dear Friends,

I have an excuse this time for being late which I trust I'll never need to use again: On August 5th my beautiful new bride and I were married in an outdoor ceremony held at the Garden of the Gods Park, Colorado Springs, CO. As you might imagine, I've been a bit distracted the last five weeks or so. But one thing I've come to value, especially lately, and which I'll speak to in this issue is the subject of SMILES!!

Think of your true love's smile. Dig out that special photo so you'll have it right in front of you. Now grab a black crayon, a brown one, maybe a green one and start marking up his or her teeth. How is the affect? Not too pleasant, eh? In yet, the look you are seeing right now is the look awaiting of us if we don't brush and floss regularly. Or is it?

Certainly if food particles and bacteria are not washed out regularly, bacteria can establish a stronghold and build into plaque and, certainly, plaque, left unchecked, can eat away at gums and teeth. But, according to Dr. Wallach, the REAL cause of dental degeneration is (you guessed it!!!), a minerally deficient diet. When we don't take in enough zinc, boron, manganese, magnesium, calcium, etc., when we fail to give our body the tools it needs to build and maintain bone, bone matrix, connective tissue and teeth, the entire structure of our mouth is undermined. Americans eat so many rich, starchy, sugary, high calorie foods. Carbohydrates, sugars, especially soft drinks are hideously damaging to our dental health and our health in general. Another thing we can all do for the health of our teeth and gums is wean ourselves off these sorts of foods.
